Mike Lee on the Balanced Budget Amendment

...

Bank failures. Bailouts. Failed stimulus packages. A surging federal deficit.

Unemployment ticking up month by month, week by week.

All you have to do is turn on the TV, pick up a newspaper, or click through a few of your favorite websites to realize something is dreadfully WRONG.

Our country’s deficit is increasing at a rate of nearly FOUR BILLION dollars a day.

Factoring in the Big Government programs and social welfare spending already “locked in,” the average American family is on the hook for nearly $800,000!

It is clear – the White House and Congress aren’t going to stop unless you and I MAKE them.

There is only one way they’re going to get serious – when they’re FORCED to balance the budget by law through a BALANCED BUDGET AMENDMENT to the Constitution.

The American people overwhelmingly favor this. But politicians in Washington are reluctant, even now, to stop their spending spree.

That’s why Senator Mike Lee has recorded a very special video message on why Congress must pass a Budget Amendment.

It’s also crucial you complete the Balanced Budget Petition I’ve prepared for you.

You see, I’d love to tell you that there’s no reason to worry – that the politicians in Washington are “experts” who are working hard to “get everything under control.”

I’d love to tell you the politicians understand that unless they not only stop, but actually CUT, spending, the entire U.S. economy could end up nose diving off a cliff.

And I’d love more than anything to tell you the politicians would never saddle our kids and grandkids with debts they can never repay.

But I can’t say that. It just isn’t true.

President Obama has announced a budget that will cut barely three percent of the projected deficit.

But don’t worry, House Republicans will save the country – they’ve proposed cuts that will cut nearly EIGHT percent of the debt!

I’m sorry to have to point it out, but these people are not serious.

It’s business as usual in Washington, D.C.

And the politicians in both parties are moving right ahead with their freedom-robbing, economy-destroying schemes.

Just consider what’s been on Congress’ agenda:

  • Socialized medicine, which gave Big Government bureaucrats control over virtually EVERY medical decision at a price tag of over $1.5 TRILLION;
  • Cap and Tax, that would drive already sky-high energy costs through the roof, massively hike taxes on hardworking Americans, and grind our economy to an IMMEDIATE halt;
  • Federal Reserve control over our ENTIRE economy, rewarding the culprits who caused our last economic meltdown with even more power and guaranteeing depression after depression until American citizens have been totally robbed of their wealth.

Our elected officials are simply out of control.

You see, when a mad dog is running loose, terrorizing a neighborhood, you lock him down.

You chain him up.

Well, that’s exactly what you and I need to do to our government with the “chains of the Constitution,” as Thomas Jefferson said.

And that’s what the Balanced Budget Constitutional Amendment would do.

If politicians can’t run massive deficits, they’ll have to actually pay the bills, stay within a budget, and set priorities – just like you and me!

But that’s not all.

If passed, the Balanced Budget Amendment would:

  • Require a two-thirds congressional majority to raise taxes;
  • Limit any increases in federal spending to no more than population growth plus inflation;
  • Unlike other so-called Balanced Budget Amendments, the one supported by C4L does not allow exemptions for “military conflicts,” something that would make the law nearly meaningless.

You and I both know it – this is the ONLY way we’re going to stop our out of control federal government from taxing and spending us into collapse.

Not only that, but if we succeed, it would be a MAJOR step toward restoring American prosperity.

And why can’t we?

Sure, the last thing the politicians want is their tax-and- spend fest in Washington to come to an end.

But they work for US!

So even if they don’t pass the Balanced Budget Amendment right away, if you and I can put the ENTIRE Congress on record, any politician who votes against us will have hell to pay at the ballot box.

Can you imagine the lame excuses?

What GOOD excuse is there for VOTING AGAINST being fiscally responsible?

There is none. Period.

That’s why your action today is so vital.

Now, before I go any further, I want you to know forcing our tax and spend Congress on record isn’t going to be easy.

The politicians in both parties are going to fight you and me tooth and nail.

But if we can turn up enough heat – if we can FORCE Congress to heed the will of the American people – I’m confident we can put Congress on record with a public, roll call vote.

Here’s how Campaign for Liberty plans to do that – hopefully, with your help.

First, we’re already busy contacting up to five million activists nationwide through mail, phones, and email to generate petitions to the U.S. Congress demanding action on the Balanced Budget Amendment.

And that’s just the beginning.

With your help, we’ll work the blogs and write guest editorials.

We’ll brief influential writers and columnists who will be sympathetic to our efforts.

We’ll work the talk radio stations and grant local media interviews to further turn up the pressure on Congress.

And a few days before the vote, if we have the resources, we’d also like to run hard-hitting targeted radio, TV, and newspaper ads.

This entire program is designed to send this one, CLEAR message to Congress – any politician who votes against the Balanced Budget Amendment should look for another job.

But such a massive effort won’t be easy – or cheap.

That’s why it’s vital you watch the special video message from Senator Mike Lee on why a Balanced Budget Amendment is so crucial.

In Liberty,

John Tate, President
Campaign for Liberty

P.S. Despite the recent elections and the continued economic crisis, the politicians in both parties in Washington seem intent on spending us into total oblivion.

We must stop them!
